About us
Our Story
Nya: a derivative of the noun “Nyal”, which means girl in the Nuer language. Traditionally the Nuer people of South Sudan and Western Ethiopia use the word Nya to reference a female or feminine name. Eden is referred to as peaceful place or garden. The symbolic Eden depicts a place of refuge and resources for women and children. The Founders Nyamal (Mal) and Kuoth both grew up in war-torn Sudan (now South Sudan) and Ethiopia, prior to resettling in the U.S. NyaEden was the perfect name for an organization that aims to empower women and children that have gone through the plight of war, offering a sense of Safety, Empowerment, Independence, Dignity, Greater Self Esteem, and Self Respect.
Both Nyamal and Kuoths’ lived experience has enabled them to help their communities thrive. Nyamal’s background is in peacebuilding and conflict resolution: Kuoth is an actress and activist who advocates for refugees. The combination of their knowledge has allowed them to reach audiences and effectively advocate for refugees and migrants.
